Why Sensory Works

The Power Of Sensory Play In Childhood Development

Sensory play is more than just fun and games.
It’s a vital component of childhood development.

The rich neural pathways formed through sensory play facilitate learning and growth in all children, regardless of their neurotype. Research shows that exposure to sensory-rich environments positively influences cognitive development.

“Sensory play is adaptable and accommodating, making it beneficial for sensory-sensitive and sensory-seeking chil dren,” said Dr. Krystal Starke, Child Testing Researcher. “It allows them to meet their unique sensory needs and adapt their environment to their preferences, promoting self- regulation and comfort.”

…Play With A Purpose

“Sensory also stimulates the brain through inclusive, open-ended play that allows self-regulation, exploration, problem-solving, and creativity,” said Corinne Eggleston, Ph.D., Manager, Early Childhood Development Re search at the Fisher-Price Play Lab. “It fosters the development of essential skills in all children, supporting their growth and learning.

…Additional Benefits of Sensory Play

Self-Regulation: One of the key benefits of sensory play is its capacity to foster self-regulation. Allowing children to control their sensory experiences empowers them to manage their emotions and reactions.

Problem-Solving: Sensory play often involves open-ended materials that encourage problem-solving.

Neurodiversity and Sensory Toys: It’s important to note that sensory play holds immense promise for neurodiverse children, including those with autism or sensory processing disorders. The versatility of sensory play makes it an effective tool for addressing these children’s unique needs and challenges.”

Why Sensory Activities work well in schools
as told by teachers and school admins.

The sensory path at our school has been helpful for many students that need some extra help with body control. There are times when the path is utilized by a small group of students. The input they receive from the sensory path helps to calm their bodies and helps them get back into a zone that they can learn. I have also seen a teacher take their whole class through the sensory path as they are returning to their homeroom from specials. It is a great way to get some extra energy out and help them to be more prepared to go back to class to continue their learning.” – Dana School Counselor

“When students start school this year, they will find two sensory paths giving students opportunities to breath, stretch, twist, turn and most importantly self regulate. I can’t thank Kristy and Amy from 321 Design enough. They worked with me to custon deisgn each path to fit the diverse needs of our school.”  – Caryn, School Principal

“The path is set up so that important developmental concepts can be integrated into it including colors and shapes, identifying patterns, and direction following. We have used the path regularly for therapy sessions as well as sensory diet and “brain breaks”. It’s a great way for students to begin taking some owner ship of their regulation and needs. We have been very pleased with the sensory path at our school and would highly recommend it to anyone!  – Suzanne, School OT

“The sensory paths are exciting and fun for our students! The cre ative design provide a way for all students to experience a motor break during hallway transitions. Walking and moving in the the – Caryn, School Principal f igure 8 pattern on the nature path promotes improved balance, increased attention and sensory regulation to support learning. A variety of shapes and patterns allow for jumping, hopping and step ping to get proprioceptive feedback for calming and organization. I highly recommend the sensory paths as a valuable tool for your school! – Patti, School Admin

“We have kids from PreK to 5th grade using it as they go by. It’s been a great addition to our P-8 school because it’s versatile. It’s been fantastic for sensory breaks during the day and whole class (or groups) especially on bad weather days. The preschool loves it. We can incorporate learning- colors, letters, and numbers. The way it’s set up it can be used one way down or as a full course back and forth. The school counselor uses it to help calm and center kids too. This sensory path is exactly what we needed.” – Susan, Teacher
