If you’ve ever wondered why the “good” class suddenly turns into a mess of shoving, shouting, and shut-down kids the second the bell rings, you already know the answer administrators rarely say out loud: the problem isn’t the classroom. It’s the space between classrooms.
Transitions are the highest-risk moments in the school day for behavioral escalation — and they’re also the moments schools invest in least. We spend enormous energy on classroom management systems, but the sixty seconds between activities are often left to chance.
A transition asks a child to do several regulatory tasks at once: disengage from one activity, tolerate a burst of noise and movement, and re-engage with a new set of expectations — often with no clear sensory or physical cue for how to do it. For a child whose nervous system is already working hard to stay regulated, that’s a lot to ask in a hallway with 24 other kids doing the same thing.

A 2016 systematic review published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found consistent positive associations between physical activity and children’s cognitive function and academic performance (Donnelly et al., 2016). More specifically, a classroom-based movement program studied with third- and fourth-graders improved on-task behavior by 8% overall — and by 20% among the students who struggled most to stay on task to begin with (Mahar et al., 2006). And a study of 10- and 11-year-olds found that a single 15-minute movement break produced significantly better selective-attention scores than continuing with no break at all (Janssen et al., 2014).
The pattern across this research is the same: the effect isn’t really about burning energy. It’s about giving the nervous system a clear, physical way to shift states — which is exactly what a transition demands and exactly what most transitions don’t provide.
That’s the piece most transition strategies miss. Verbal reminders (“quiet feet,” “voices off,” “walk in a line”) ask the brain to self-correct through language and instruction-following — often the hardest skills to access when a child is already dysregulated. A physical, structured cue can meet a child earlier in that process, before words are doing much good.
It’s easy to file “sensory strategies” under IEP accommodations and move on. But every child transitions dozens of times a day, and every one of those transitions is a small regulation event. A tool that gives the whole hallway — not just a subset of students — a consistent, physical way to shift from one state to another reduces the number of small fires a teacher has to put out before instruction even starts.
That’s the case for building sensory paths and wall graphics into transition zones: hallways, cafeteria lines, the walk from recess back to class. They give every student — not just the ones with a plan on file — a predictable physical routine that bridges the gap between “chaos” and “quiet,” without requiring a teacher to stop and manage it.

Do sensory paths only help students with sensory processing needs or diagnosed conditions?
No. While they’re especially helpful for students with sensory processing differences, ADHD, or autism, the underlying mechanism — using brief movement to shift regulatory state — benefits any child moving between activities. That’s why schools see behavior gains building-wide, not just in specific classrooms.
