Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Neuroaesthetics point out something easy to overlook: people in developed countries spend more than 90% of their time inside buildings. More than half the time, what someone’s body physically registered didn’t match what they said they preferred.
In other words: kids can’t always tell you a space is overstimulating them. Their bodies are already reacting before their brains catch up.
This is exactly why movement-based tools matter so much in schools. Enriched environments — ones that offer light, texture, and above all, the chance to move — have been linked in design research to real improvements in mental and physical well-being. A sensory path isn’t a novelty. It’s a low-cost, evidence-aligned intervention that gives a dysregulated nervous system somewhere to go.
Neuroaesthetic principles are already shaping hospitals, schools, and community spaces specifically because healing and focus depend on the environment, not just the individual. Architecture and interiors firms are now building entire practices around “neuroaesthetic design,” pointing to research on natural materials, movement, and sensory-rich environments to justify million-dollar renovations in hospitals and corporate campuses.
